Defined as “uncontrollable crying in babies more than three hours a
day, more than three days a week for three weeks or more, usually
in the afternoon and evening hours”, infantile colic has
chiropractic treatment proving that “Spinal manipulation
has a positive short-term effect on infantile colic.”
Infantile colic, a condition first described in 1894, has yet
to be given cause(s). Yet, with this condition that is estimated
to affect 22.5% of all newborns, studies have determined what it
is not caused by:
- air or constrictions in the intestines
- gastrointestinal transit time
- intestinal hormones
- intestinal microflora
- method of delivery (vaginal, Cesarean section or vacuum
extraction)
- use of pudendal block
- epidural analgesia
- general anesthesia; or intravenous oxytocin.
Victoria C. Arcadi, D.C. in Sherman Oaks, California, has a
specialty in pediatrics and as pregnancy staff doctor for five
years in Gentle Birth Center Medical Group in Glendale,
California. She has found that infants may receive birth trauma
resulting in a molding of the cranium due to the twisting the
head must receive through the pelvis area. This twisting results
in thoracic subluxations which affect breathing, the heart,
stomach, gall bladder, and pancreas. Due to this, the trapezius
muscles spasms contribute to headaches. In addition, joint
dysfunction early in an infants life can lead to breast feeding
difficulties and improper feedings, which in turn can lead to
colic and digestive problems.
Chiropractic treatment, which is 90 percent effective in the
treating of newborns upon the moment of birth, through full spine
chiropractic adjustments, has proven overwhelming results.
Therefore, it is imperative that all infants be checked out by a
chiropractor to see if adjustments can help them start life in
healthy, pain-free manner.
